History and Culture

The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, the tomb of Sun Yat-sen, a pioneer of China’s democratic revolution, was built in 1926 and took six years to complete. The designer, Lu Yanzhi, with the core concept of “wooden bells warning the world”, incorporated elements such as 392 steps and blue glazed tiles into the architectural language, symbolizing the 392 million Chinese people at that time and the ideal of a blue sky and a bright sun.

The buildings along the central axis of the mausoleum, such as the Bo ‘ai Archway, the mausoleum Gate and the memorial hall, not only follow the regulations of the imperial mausoleums of the Ming and Qing dynasties, but also innovatively use reinforced concrete ancient-style structures, which were selected as “China’s 20th Century Architectural Heritage” in 2016.

Architecture and Landscape

Bell-shaped layout: Viewed from above in the shape of a “free bell”, the square in front of the tomb is the arc of the bell top, and the dome of the tomb chamber is the pendulum, symbolizing the awakening of the nation.

A blend of Chinese and Western styles: The lintel of the memorial hall is inscribed with the Three Principles of the People: nation, democracy, and people’s livelihood. The blue sky and white sun Mosaic on the dome showcases the pinnacle of craftsmanship in the Republic of China era. The curved sound wall of the music stage draws inspiration from the acoustic design of ancient Greek theaters.

The surrounding buildings include the Liuhui Pavilion (a waterside pavilion), the Sutra Repository (a library of the Republic of China), and the cemetery for the Fallen soldiers of the National Revolutionary Army, forming a pattern of “stars surrounding the moon”.
